As funny as it may be but I am writing this article on a beautiful Sunday afternoon while I have a matcha cheesecake milk tea from Ja Yums Shakes & Pearls sitting on the left side of my laptop. As I sip into my bittersweet drink, I can’t help but think: why do we, Filipino’s love milk tea?
Below are some of the reasons why milk tea is the newest craze in the Philippines.
Rise of Korean Pop Culture
Gong Yoo, Park Seo-Joon, Cha Eun-Woo, Kim So Hyun, BTS, EXO, IU and Blackpink, to name a few, are some of the names a Kpop/Kdrama fan knows by heart.
With our local television screens showing drama series such as The World of the Married, Goblin and What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim?, I can say the Hallyu wave is tiding well in the Philippines. No pun intended.
For the uninitiated, Hallyu means “Korean Wave,” which refers to the growing influence of South Korean pop culture worldwide. In the Philippines, this means long queues outside restaurants offering Korean barbecue, K-pop concerts selling out in minutes and K-beauty stores popping up in malls nationwide.
Travel to Other Countries
Are you also one of those pips who are quick to sniff out seat sales? Lucky you! With the new generation travelling around the world, milk tea has likewise travelled by word of mouth.
In the past, people from some countries in Southeast Asia were only accustomed to drinking coffee, soda, juice ice teas and hot tea – a very American practice to say the least. But just a few years ago, different types of milk tea brands were introduced and a lot of businessmen have become interested in investing in them, causing the milk tea madness in Southeast Asia.
Hangout
Milk tea is cheap and can easily be your excuse to go out and hang out with friends or invite crush on a date (though in this pandemic, I highly doubt that).
